The Thomas family have been prominent in the local community for many years, as John Thomas's father was a parliamentarian in the Jawaharlal Nehru government, the first government of independent India. They own the oldest rubber plantation in India and also the 1,300 acre Teekoy plantation, which is the oldest in Kottayam district.
